The Pirot District covers an area of 2,761 km2. The administrative center is Pirot, but the district also covers Bela Palanka, Babusnica and Dimitrovgrad.
It is a border district with Bulgaria. This is famous as a rug-making area with a very distinctive style of weave and designs.
The rubber industry leader “Tigar” from Pirot is the strongest corporation in this area.
The town of Dimitrovgrad is often confused with the town of the same name in Bulgaria, so there are movements for it to be renamed Tzaribrod.
The municipality of Bela Palanka (meaning White Town) is small but sits on the ancient Roman town Remesiana.
