East Sarajevo is the main administrative, cultural, commercial and financial center for the eastern part of Republika Srpska. It covers the eastern part of the city of Sarajevo but also towns, villages, and hills all the way to the eastern border with Serbia and Montenegro.
There are five major Bosnian mountains which are part of this area: Treskavica, Bjelasnica, Jahorina, Trebevic, Igman. Igman is known as the place of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.
This area includes city of Foca, a famous trading center on the route between Roman Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and Constantinople (Istanbul).
Traditionally, this municipality is known as educational center for both orthodox and Islamic schools.
Sutjeska, which is the oldest National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is also located in the municipality.
